Mrs Bemused and I have just finished and thoroughly enjoyed watching the mini series "Roots" on DVD. I think the answer might be connected.
NTM did not get rid of it's ban on interracial "dating" until the 1980s, 120 years after the civil war that abolished slavery.
I realise it is an uncomfortable subject for many and hopefully the attitudes of NTM past are no longer the attitudes held today. But we cannot change the past, only hope to make a better path for the future by influencing what changes we can.

Unfortunately as Downunder MKs who had the misfortune to be in PNG, we tumbled out of Numonohi, back into our own society wondering what on earth we had struck and disillusioned with much of it.
Your point is very valid and correct. The bigots who had so much influence at Numonohi did no one any favours and were a very poor representation of the many fine people who did not share their strange views.
I must confess I tumbled out never wanting to hear another white adult male American religious voice ever again and yet I had become in part a bigot myself, because I had experienced the kindness of many other Americans who were on the field (and probably had no idea what weird thinking their own children were being subjected to in the school system) and allowed my judgement to be clouded.
Now I find myself corresponding with Americans on pretty much a daily basis, some of whom are male and have deeply held religious convictions. I am happy to report that I have escaped out of my trench and very much enjoy and appreciate swapping ideas, thoughts and humour.

Please forgive any offense or discomfort caused to people of impeccable virtue such as yourself, for you have helped those of us from the bottom of the globe come to appreciate the good is present in abundance and rotten apples should not taint the reputation of the many good apples.

However in my imperfect unsaintly state, I am still trying to love Australians. Please bear with me, this could take some time and effort .

Regarding Frank Sidney Parker

RE: Investigation of Allegations of child abuse in violation of NTM’s Policies.

Description of Report
Allegations of actual abuse by Frank Parker at Vianopolis, East Brazil, first came to light in 1994. Further communication revealed that in the early 1980’s some of the staff were concerned about Parker’s tight rein on the little dorm. The third investigation into abuse by Frank Parker began in May, 2011.

Description & Scope of Investigation
The investigative team reviewed NTM’s relevant records and the information provided by the NTM USA Child Protection Committee. Interviews were scheduled and carried out with survivors, witnesses, parents of survivors, the Vianopolis Admin. Board, East Brazil Field Committee, and family members of Frank Parker.

2. Survivors reported that he would stand in the door of the bathroom and watch them take showers (not allowing them to close the shower curtain), walk in on the girls when they were dressing or changing, and search the girls’ rooms and underwear drawers. He also bathed girls over the objection of older girls who offered to assist the younger girls.
3. Survivors reported he would have the girls lift their dresses or have them pull their panties down before spankings and on occasion stare at them for long periods of time.

6. Survivors reported Parker prohibited visits with friends or siblings at their homes or dorms, and the cafeteria. If/when permitted, he would restrict to whom and the amount of time for the visit.
7. Survivors reported that Parker censored letters to parents and listened in on phone conversations with parents. The survivors were afraid of retaliation against themselves or siblings if they told anyone about their treatment.
8. Survivors reported he gave repeated spankings as a form of control.
9. Survivors and witnesses reported that certain girls in the little dorm were his favorites and received special privileges.
10. Frank S. Parker is deceased and could not be interviewed for this investigation.

Sexual Abuse Allegation Affirmed:
Based on the testimony from survivors, witnesses and family members, the team determined that behavior fitting the above definition of sexual abuse was substantiated. The team determined that Frank Sidney Parker committed sexual abuse by inappropriate touching of the girls, watching them bathe, asking them to pull down their panties before spanking them.

Physical Abuse Allegation Affirmed:
Based on testimony from (survivors, etc) the team determined…physical abuse was substantiated…Frank Sidney Parker committed physical abuse by the spankings he administered.

Emotional Abuse Allegation Affirmed:
Based on testimony (from survivors, etc), the team determined …emotional abuse was substantiated. The team determined that Frank Sidney Parker committed emotional abuse by his intimidation of the girls in relation to their phone calls, censoring their letters.

For those who wonder what numbers 1, 4 and 5 say, I will point out again that due to the way this report was written, posting these would expose individual survivors and their confidentiality, thereby re-abusing them.

This, as I have said before, insures that these reports will never be shown to the public in full, as written. I stand by my position that they could have been composed in a different way, so as not to be so specific and revealing.

Suffice it to say, the information in these three points show clearly that Frank Parker was a sexual predator who abused very small girls who were entrusted into his care.
