In contrast to his efforts to support David Brooks, who confessed to acts of child molestation, NTM Executive Committee Member Dean Van Vliet did not recommend reaching out to or in any way helping the victim or her parents, even though he knew they were in great need of assistance.

The L.A. Police Department is investigating an allegation of sexual abuse against a 15-year-old. The victim is now 55.
The suspect: Bill Cosby, the warm and fuzzy dad from the Cosby show.
"LAPD chief Charlie Beck had said people making allegations of sexual abuse against Mr Cosby should speak with his officers, even if their claims were outside the statute of limitations for prosecutions."

We begin tonight on Action News with the Bill Cosby case.... (10 minutes later) Media, police, prosecutors and plaintiff's attorneys line up and take a number.

In other news, New Tribes missionary kids raised in PNG, Philippines, Senegal, Brazil, Bolivia, Panama, etc., claim sexual abuse by poor missionaries, most of whom are dead or dying, working for a mission that recently had to borrow from a Catholic monastery just to keep the lights on. The abuse is alleged to have occurred when Eisenhower was still president. Impartial child abuse expert Theresa Lynn Sidebotham reports that most of these abuse claims are simply fruit of typical MK psychological issues. Scott Ross, writing to NTM Members on December 19, 1994, on behalf of Macon Hare, David Calderwood, Dean Van Vliet, T.A. Bennett, Mel Wyma, Bryan Coupland, Oli Jacobsen, Leslie Pederson, and Duane Stous, regarding Frank Parker, approves of the actions of the field committee in Brazil, and announces the Executive Committee's decisions regarding Frank Parker, including the authoritative and manly, "There is no feeling that Frank will be dismissed from the Mission at this time."

But fast forward to the mysterious IHART report, the release of which was to a limited audience coupled with threats for any further disclosure. The IHART report doesn't mention any of the above heroes of the faith. They took ownership of the matter at least in December of 1994. They made decisions...they expressed feelings. But when it hit the fan, the intrepid Executive Committee was/is nowhere to be seen. And where did Scott Ross go?

According to Theresa Sidebotham, my sister probably just suffered pain, not abuse. And who was responsible for the pain? According to Theresa Sidebotham....my parents are responsible for the pain.

Can you hear Scott Ross preaching the gospel of Sidebotham to Larry and the boys? "It wasn't abuse, it was just pain. Overseas, a long time ago, statutes have run (the Cosby case is in California, the law is different)...plus, there's a feeling that most of the abusers will be dead in another 10 years, and IHART will never point the finger at Sanford, you can bet your Sidebotham on that. And if things get messy, just blame the parents."

"The report, discussing numerous sensitive personnel issues and naming specific employees, was released simultaneously to the board and the general public. A board should receive such a report confidentially and then decide whether the values in play are best served by public announcements."

What are the "values in play," Ms. Sidebotham?

1) Protect the reputation of the Executive Committee at all costs.
2) Protect the assets of the mission.
3) Protect the the relationships with donors.
4) Never disclose, always hide.
5) Never act, always delay.

Applying the above teachings from Professor Sidebotham to the IHART boondoggle, it is clear that the investigations are to serve the interests of the "board". IHART is not set up to serve the interests of children who were sexually abused by New Tribes Mission missionaries. The board or executive committee controls the information and its release.

To his credit, Scott Ross is doing a masterful job. Bringing Sidebotham on board was a stroke of genius. NTM no longer has to worry about Billy Graham's grandson, the Wizard of Boz, rifling through the documents Macon and company failed to destroy. NTM has secured the castle, filled the moat and provided google map instructions to IHART postal inspectors on how to locate field committee members.
