I remember in Boot camp nursery days that the parents were encouraged to begin disciplining their children asap. One baby in the nursery had been born in jungle camp right before I started boot camp. My roommate and I both had asthma and we thought this baby probably had it too. She definitely had some difficulty breathing especially when laying down. I think she was about five months old. I remember the mom bringing in a wooden spoon and telling me the baby doesn't like to be put down and fusses and cries so I was supposed to spank her lightly on the thigh with the spoon because she already had a rebellious spirit. One morning my roommate and I were on nursery duty together. I never spanked the baby with a spoon. I felt that was horrible. If they would have had cameras in that day I would have been reprimanded for it, but this was the day of no webcams etc. and I was able to avoid what I thought was cruel. So anyway the morning my fellow asthmatic roomie and I did nursery we decided to try putting the baby to sleep in her chair that she could sit in. Guess what? She fell asleep without crying because she could breathe. We told the parents what we had done and we were met with disapproval. Now whenever I tell this story to people in my non- Ntm realm today, they are shocked. I am disgusted with myself. I knew that was wrong and although I didn't do it, why the heck did I stick with an institution that told parents to spank babies that were so young?

Luke 11:46
"what sorrow also awaits you experts in religious law! For you crush people with unbearable religious demands, and you never lift a finger to ease the burden."

The original word used for crush in this topic had the meaning of piling up and overloading. It was the same verb used for the way donkeys were loaded with piles of high baggage in NT times. My God detests people spiritually abusing others. Sometimes I realize I may not see the demise of Ntm here on earth, but woe to them when they face my God face to face.

NTM will be quick to defend itself with the assurance that corporal punishment is no longer condoned in child care settings.

All well and good, but there were DECADES of this level of atrocious child abuse not only condoned, but practically mandated! The good missionaries were the ones who beat their children into submission, from the time they were tiny!

How many thousands of adult MKs are out there now, whose spirits are broken because of this kind of mistreatment at the hands of others, and at the hands of their own mothers and fathers? They are the walking wounded. The collateral damage.

And parents still justify all this. They still refuse to see how terribly wrong this was.

I hang my head in shame because I too, participated in this system. At least with our first child. By the time our fourth one came along, he hardly got any spankings at all.

I was a bad missionary.

But a pretty good Mom, I hope. :|

What matters Raz, is that now you see the truth. The past is where it should be for all of us who are trying to move on with what is right. Don't beat yourself up for being mislead. That is not on your shoulders. :)

Very wise advise. The past is what life dealt us. Now is the time for a mixture of reflective learning from the good and bad of the past and planning for the future. And the future is something to aim to make the best of what we can, both for ourselves and others if we have the capacity.
Which of course is why wonderful people like Raz spend so much time here, so that others can have a better future, away from the mess of the past. Many have benefited from the wisdom of those who have been to hell and back, then bravely looked into the furnace to see who they could help. They don't have to, but it makes them true examples of what they believe, when they do.

So a toast to all our futures, may they better for us being here :) .

Welcome NowAware and iwillflyagain!

Your names could be the names of so many others!
We have been through Adult Missionary Abuse Syndrome
and survived.
But it was devastating at the time.
So we understand what you are talking about.
We feel free now and
Blessed to be OUT.
And we're sticking with
Everyone here to see justice and healing take place.
Someday.
Soon.
We know it's so hard to tell your own story.
It brings back too much garbage.
You do have a voice here
And many who will listen
With understanding.
