I found this letter in my mother-in-law's keepsakes after she had died. It was written by my daughter when she was very small. I cannot read it without shedding tears. And I ask myself, why did my mother-in-law keep this letter, but never criticize me for abandoning my children? Why didn't she shake me and shout, "Are you crazy?? This is wrong!!"

Dear grandma and grandpa I love you. I'm living in the dorm I have fun In the dorm My mom and dad and my sister and J (brother) are at "T" my tribe. Do you know the "S" family? whell my freind is "L S" I have fun whith her in the dorm. I play whith Cristy Balarina do you now her she is my doll I play whith her and "L"'s doll that is named shery I mayed up the name for "L". I go in a room whith "R R" and "L S" my freind. The dorm parents' names is ant "J" and uncle "B" they are nice to the kinds in the dorm. I have never got a spankin in the dorm. I sometimes talk on the radio but this is a seacret for just you and grampa somtims I do not want to talk on the radio because then I will miss them more.

The agony!!!

I did not speak to my parents for months at a time...

When in college I went for just about a year without writing to them. If I didn't write I didn't think of them, and didn't miss them. I still have a hard time calling my Mom.

I just struggle to see how any good can come from young kids being apart from their parents for so long. And when they do talk via radio everyone else can hear. They must have been pretty stilted conversations. Can someone tell me if there are any/many MK boarding schools still in existence? NTM or other missions you know of?

I have almost all of the letters our kids wrote to us.
At 1st, I thought I would keep the best ones.
(There was lots of repetition. )
But it was not very long before I started keeping them ALL.
I was always going to re-read them.
I never did.
I was going to give their letters to them when they grew up.
But now I have reservations about that.
I just don't know.
They may not want this reminder.

I find this thread very sad. Full stop.
