My maternal grandfather left instructions that I sing this at his funeral, which took place in Pippa Passes, Kentucky in 1992. My grandfather died from a heart attack which he suffered getting ready to go take a deposition. Today I'm in Campinas, Brazil, and in less than an hour I'll drive by the very spot where my paternal grandfather died in a car wreck in 1989, on Via Anhanguera in the city of Jundiai. Both men died with their boots on. Both men worked hard to the very end. My grandfather who was an attorney helped establish a Christian college, a Christian radio station, a children's home (which later became an NTM boot camp), and he supported missionaries. My other grandfather came to Brazil in 1949 and worked hard to get the gospel to distant tribes. He was asked to leave the leadership of the mission because my grandmother wouldn't quit yapping about demons and their presence, but my grandfather didn't skip a beat. He kept plugging along. He represented the mission from Recife to Curitiba, and NTM would be hard pressed to ever have another representative like him. My attorney grandfather never gave up participating in politics in East Kentucky. He became state representative but also lost many races.
Both of them are, today, with the One that truly gives me hope. He truly has the heart of the king in his hand. And as my mother has told me since I was a little kid, God is at work in our lives, all of our lives. He is not willing that any should perish. So, "with malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right (A. Lincoln)", let us proceed today looking to the author and finisher of our faith.
