Self investigation by an organisation raises credibility issues, that is why there are often at least two investigations into major incidents, accidents or procedural failures. Yes the organisation involved needs to do it's own investigation, but also outside agencies also need to conduct an investigation that is in no way tainted by the possibility of not being independent.

As someone on the peripheries looking in from far away in another judicial system, it is beyond belief as to why the police/law enforcers were not called in decades ago to apprehend the first criminal offender. This would have sent a very clear message and NTM would not be in the mess it is now, having to squirm under the plethora of exposures of its multitude of child sex offenders (and other child abusers).

The Australians got it right by having a Royal Commission of Inquiry into this scandal in other organisations. It is totally independent, has the best legal minds in the land working on it and does not take "no" for an answer.

NTM should be investigated by a Government sponsored group with teeth. Not a religious quango or some obviously non independent group. And don't stop at NTM, look deeply into the pasts of any other organisation who have orchestrated similar cover ups, no matter who they are.

Otherwise we are going to be here for decades, waiting for true justice to dribble out.

The independence of an investigation is not defined by the words or assurances of the institution being investigated. It is defined by a structure that requires the institution to get out of the driver’s seat and give up control. This can be a profound step forward for an organization who is genuinely focused on demonstrating love and repentance to those who have been hurt.

The next time you hear an organization proudly announce that it is going to launch an independent investigation, do a little digging and find out who’s really sitting in the driver’s seat.

It is up to the watching public to make sure that these institutions are not misleading victims, witnesses, and other interested parties regarding the true nature of the investigation. Disguising an internal investigation as independent ultimately exploits and hurts abuse survivors who are told they are engaging in a particular type of process only to learn when it’s too late that they have unwittingly participated in something that will be used to protect the institution.
