MK Safety Net is a not for profit so any funds sent directly to MK Safety Net are tax deductible.

If someone wanted to sponsor say a specific MK to go to conference, could they send the money via MKsafety net to that MK, and get a tax receipt in the process?

Complicated I know, but having a tax receipt could be a good advantage.

I think that is possible because MKSN is trying to collecting funds for MKs. When you send your donation just send a note that which MK you would like it to go for. It is like giving at church to a specific missionary your church supports.

Shary can check into that for us, but one glitch I can foresee is that MKSN will only be receiving the registration fee. So that might be the only thing they could provide a tax-deductible receipt for.

The majority of the expense for people living far from Chicago is that in addition to the registration fee, by far the majority of our expenses will be for transportation (in many cases airfare), motel room, and food.

It adds up to quite a lot. But if MKSN is able to provide a tax deduction for donations, that might be possible only for the part that they actually get? Which is the registration fee?

(I might be totally off on this.)

idea: If you could list on MKSN under the "sponsor me" a rough estimate of cost for an MK to get there from NE, South, West and Midwest US and then a rough estimate for International MKs to travel/lodge. That way a donor can donate and request the funds be specified to the MK they want to sponsor and reason for that "Missionary" to receive sponsorhip. Then that MK can send a Thank you letter with a letter about the conference and how it helped them heal to be with other MKs and grab some face to face support and love and what the MK gathered as far as trauma therapies available, tips for healing family scars that may or may not ever heal and tools to deal with that etc etc.

This way it is going through MKSN and that MK so each can do their taxes and the sponsor only worry about their reason for generosity.....a charity that will use their funds for a cause!

Does that help. This takes MKSN out of "preference" issues among MKs as the sponsor chooses just as our parent. This itself learning today how things worked and how my parents survived or struggled helped me understand. I have and am going through me huge palette of emotions all to be worked out and new healing gained.

First of all apply to MKSN by Feb 15th. MKSN needs the details for travel (sorry no private jets) coach if flying, train or bus, mileage if driving. Give an estimate of the tickets cost. I know that they change a lot. Hotel at $89 US per night. Here is a copy of the application but you must register on the web site. I know you all see the words "small amount" and you think well they can't help me. DON"T THINK that apply anyway for what you need. Also if someone wants to send $ in to MKSN for you to cover all your costs that would not come out of the MKSN funds, but apply to help MKSN keep thing straight for tax reasons. Hope this will clear some things up for all you people I can't wait to hug.

MK Safety Net has a small amount of funds available to former MKs who suffered abuse to assist with travel and/or accommodation if necessary to allow the individual to attend the Conference. Assistance will be for travel and/or accommodation only and the amount will depend on the number of approved applicants and the resources available. Participants are expected to cover their own meals and the $150 registration fee for the Conference.
