I feel like a Vianopolis historian after my interview today; well at least I could speak for one decade there:1980-1990. The primary interview regarding my experiences there lasted 4 hours. I came prepared with year books from each of the 10 years to help identify who was where and when. It helps to identify which year things happen since my memories are by what grade I was in rather than the date. I relayed information regarding my brother's death, my two years in the Frank Parker dorm, and the following several years in which my brother was in the Parker dorm. After a break for lunch and copying letters from various NTM people, the rest of the afternoon I gave information I knew second hand--obviously with the qualification that it was hear-say. I wasn't anticipating it to be a full day event, but if you have fewer experiences to cover your interview could be much shorter.
For those of you who are unwilling or unable to talk to the IHART investigators, let me assure you that I understand the reluctance or inability to revisit that part of your life again. You need to do the right thing for you, which may be self-care and focusing on your current life. It is annoying and frustrating to be talking about something 30 years after it happened for (by my count) the 5th investigation made into allegations that Frank Parker was abusive; the first three happening "in house" at Via and the fourth with Scott Ross, the attorney at Sanford. I was not involved the first time concerns regarding Frank were brought to the board, though I felt the repercussions of it having been in Frank's "care" at the time.
I found the investigators to be polite, supportive, and thorough as they try to piece together what happened. If you can and are willing to interview with them, they need first hand accounts to be able to build their case. I think they would like to compile something similar to the GRACE report on Fanda, but obviously need the information to do so.
Perhaps in the meantime NTM could post something similar to Surgeon General's Warning on a pack of cigarettes: Warning, placing your children in one of our boarding schools may be hazardous to you child's emotional and spiritual health. We have been found to have covered up child abuse for a number of years at Fanda and are now under serious investigation at two other schools while others schools are queuing up for their turns.
Oh, well. Not likely to happen. But I wish I could save other mks from similar experiences and other parents the grief my parents have been through for the past decades.
