Further information from NTM regarding a disagreement between them and GRACE on how to handle an issue that was exposed during their investigation of abuses at Fanda.
This helps to shed light on NTM's decision not to use GRACE for investigations of abuse at other schools. So I am copying it here under this thread.

STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO THE GRACE REPORT FINDINGS AND RECOMMENDATIONS ABOUT DONNA BEACH


The statements made in reference to Donna Beach were carefully looked into by the Executive Board. There were a number of serious allegations made and NTM sought outside legal counsel and further investigations were made into the facts and the interpretation of the findings, before determining its response to the recommendations made by GRACE concerning Donna Beach in the August 28, 2010, Amended Final report by the GRACE organization.

It should be pointed out that during our investigation of the allegations made by GRACE against Donna Beach, it was determined that absolutely no interviews were conducted by anyone representing GRACE, with the young man or his family, nor Mrs. Beach or her family to verify the factuality of what was alleged, prior to the publication of the report.

It has also been established that Donna Beach was not a Fanda School staff member nor was the young man a student at Fanda. Additionally, the young man has never, at any time, brought any accusations against Donna Beach. The incident was dealt with openly at the time. Gary and Donna Beach’s home church was informed of the reasons for their dismissal from NTM in 1985 and many others on the Senegal Field have also verified that the leaders communicated this to them as well.

Three years later Mr. and Mrs. Beach reapplied to NTM for reassessment for further missionary service. They entered NTM’s training for a period of further evaluation. NTM leadership in partnership with their local church were able to commend them to a new field of service. The members of the new field were made aware of what had necessitated Mr. and Mrs. Beach’s dismissal from Senegal.

Since that time Gary and Donna Beach have served for 23 years in both Africa and Europe. They are respected and esteemed by their colleagues and have a blameless testimony.

The Executive Board acknowledges that Donna Beach submitted to all of the policies and procedures in place in 1988 with NTM knowing all the details relating to her dismissal in 1985. Therefore, Mrs. Beach will not be terminated again from membership over this same issue. We apologize for the delay in making this clarifying statement.

Just as an FYI so you all don't have to dig yourselves, here are at least two key parts of the GRACE report that are alluded to by this statement:

From page 17 under "The Child Abuse at Fanda" section:

"Sexual abuse of a male MK was reported by several as having been committed by Donna Beach, a Field Committee member’s wife. Around 1985 to 1988, Donna Beach became sexually involved with a teen MK while tutoring him at Fanda. (94) The perpetrator’s family was sent back to Boot Camp and was later allowed to return to a new NTM field. (95) The victim’s parents were reportedly also ordered back to Boot Camp but were eventually expelled from the field. (96) The victim of this sexual abuse was noted suspiciously in the Field Committee minutes, without apparent recognition that this was a case of child sexual abuse. (97) The scandal was kept very quiet and never reported to the authorities. (98)

(97) 1142: “Keep close eye on him. Any problems in camp or village and he is to leave our property for good. Not to be in dorm during school. Possibly few days in guest room. If he requests to go out east, it will be discouraged.” See also 1143.

(98) 455. In Paul Wyma’s field notes, it was recorded: “85 Donna Beach (leave the lid on this)” (454)."

From the recommendations section page 57:

"Donna Beach (Member of NTM-USA)

As a result of the sexual abuse of a child, Donna Beach should be removed from NTM Membership. This shall be evidenced by a written notice signed by the NTM Executive Committee and must include:

• A general summary of the basis for the removal.
• A summary of NTM’s failure to immediately report the sexual abuse to
civil authorities.
• A summary of NTM’s failure to remove Donna Beach when it first
learned of the abuse.
• A commitment that NTM-USA shall not provide any form of
recommendation on behalf of Donna Beach.

The removal notice must be placed in Donna Beach’s member file, and must
be delivered to Donna Beach. NTM shall also contact Donna Beach’s church pastor
and elders and follow up with written notice of the action of NTM.

Finally, NTM shall fully cooperate with any and all civil and/or criminal investigations and/or actions relating to the alleged abuse perpetrated by Donna Beach."

I'm guessing this is not because they didn't try, but more likely that they wouldn't talk. It would be nice if they'd clarify this point regarding Mrs. Beach at least.

The report doesn't say that she was on staff at Fanda, only that she tutored the individual. Not sure why this matters. The incident may have been dealt with openly, but the infamous Wyma memo implies otherwise at the EC level. Why was the "lid" being kept on something already "dealt with openly" or is there a timing issue here? Was the reason for the dismissal this "incident" or another? If this "incident" (or three years' worth of incidents per the GRACE report) was the reason for dismissal from NTM in 1985, why does it matter that, "the young man has never, at any time, brought any accusations against Donna Beach?" If this was the grounds for dismissal, it apparently didn't matter that he didn't bring accusations in the past.

Isn't the point that these policies were inadequate such that Mrs. Beach should never have been reinstated?

I think we've all missed the most obvious reason why NTM isn't using GRACE for further investigations. It's right in their name: Godly Response to Abuse in a Christian Environment.

From their NCA web site, part of all the changes that don't make the kids feel bad or put the parents "work" above them.
That last part is nothing but fear and if you read the whole thing you will see that emotional control is used over and over even down to a 15 minute time span they call work detail. If you are an adult and think this is all normal that a kid should not have the right to use his own "free will" to believe what he wants, then you deserve your kids being fucked up in the head for life and you will all never know what it is like to be free.

I really wonder how many of you really want change?
