I found this today, in the Do Right BJU Facebook page. Hundreds of MKs in NTM were sexually abused. Thousands of them were physically abused. Including my own. Corporal punishment instructions and policies in NTM led to cruel physical abuse, which also got tangled up with emotional and spiritual abuse as well. The instructions and photos in this now-outdated ACE manual make me wince. Because I one participated in this system and did not understand how harmful it was to children I truly loved. http://leavingfundamentalism.wordpress. ... en-by-ace/ |

Tickerty Tackerty Whack, whack, whack Dem kids are naughty Beat them blue and black Oh Praise the Lord We are richly blessed Beat the living daylights Out of the unconfessed And to the heathens we say Do not protest We are dedicated to His will And we know best! We know best For in love we beat The evil forces with violence We defeat And we spread the love To kids not our own Dorms parent manufactured Cry and groan And the kids will thank us Yes they will For we beat out of them All that is wrong and ill And they'll turn out healthy Of mind and soul For beating them regularly Makes them whole |

You got it right again, Bemused. So true. Too true. All of it. Shaking my head with deep sadness. |

My personal experience with corporal punishment is probably different than most. My parents were not of the spanking persuasion, just a modest occassional correction for errant behaviour, which I have no problem with. Most Kiwi missionaries found the "Spank em black and blue" theology to be bizzare and offensive and therefore did not comply with guidelines set by those who set the rules. There were notable exceptions, generally those who had their children born within their time at NTM. Disturbing were the staff at Numonohi who seemed to derive some perverse pleasure out of punishing other peoples children and one who bragged openly about how much fun he had out of tricking children into choosing their own punishment. I doubt they punished their own children the way they got stuck into other peoples, a point that would be interesting to clarify. And then there was all the psyco babble about breaking a childs will. How many adults had their will to live replaced by a lifelong searching for a reason to exist and just following the only thing they knew because of this strange philosophy. And so are the mistakes of the past repeated in the next generation and the next, until someone has the courage to stop and say, this is all wrong? Of course the pendulum of punishment has to considerable degree swung to far the other way, but that's another issue for another time. On the Corporal Punishment issue, my parents got it about right . |

my second set of dorm parents, from NZ, used to chase the kids around with a fly swatter. smacking as best she could on legs and bottoms while the kids ran all up and down the halls, onto beds and off again. so bazaar. i had never seen such a site. this was within my first year of dorm life; i was 11 years old. the third set of dorm parents did it 'proper' NTM style with the belt and plenty of guilt. they ruled with us with fear. PNG. |

It would appear the dorm parent mentioned by Highlander was not the Kiwi missionary who succumbed to a neurolgoical carcinoma and therefore cannot have their bizzare behaviour in some ways excused by a physical condition. |
