Recent conversation with my mom:

Mom: Sweetie, I don’t think you should say that all MK’s are damaged.

Me: Right, Mom, I don’t say that.

Mom: I mean look at the good MK’s that went back and are serving as missionaries.

Me: Whaaaaaat?

Actually, that almost makes me throw up.

Not to put too fine a point on it, threewillows, but that exchange probably does not qualify as a "conversation."

Unlike JerryB, I do not want to throw up. I want to hang my head. Not too many years ago, that would have been me not conversing with you. Almost word for word!

Yes, Gene. I only highlighted the "hmmmm" part of the conversation. The whole conversation was much longer and somewhat more productive.

I have had several conversations regarding fanda and other fields over the past couple of years with my mom. The outcome is different from day to day. It is a strange reality.

Actually.....
From our sad experience on an NTM field
in several conversations with MKs back on the field
it came out that they didn't know how to make it in their home countries.
So they went to the field.....
hmmmmmmmm?

I don't want to group all mk's that returned to the field, but MB I believe you may have something there. When I was at NTBI the push to join back up was pretty intense. Not particularly verbal, just an assumption that you would return followed by disappointment and a light shunning if you were thinking of choosing another path.

I felt it most from other students. "How can you not go back knowing the need?" Oh,and of course the emotional packed chapels. Let me tell you, if I went everywhere I was drawn to because of an emotional plea I think I would have traveled around the world several times now!
Probably the one that hurt the most though was going back to Bible School after a holiday and getting engaged (to a great Christian man not from NTM) and having another student ( someone I had gone to school with for a couple of years in Panama) tell me that when they told their parents they were so saddened. Why? Because I wasn't marrying an NTMer and going back to the field!

Reading the above post makes my heart weep yet again.
I am Bemused's sister and I love him very very
much. We have stood by each other through the good and the bad. I have some amazing memories
We were ever so close when Mum and Dad were overseas and really up until recently.
He is my children's favourite uncle too and I must say they miss you and the return of your txts.
I grew up in the same family and there is probably no one that knows what he went through
better than me.
I also know what Mum and Dad are going through.
I appeal to you, Brother, please don't shut yourself off from me. I'm not the monster you think I am, and you don't know
where I stand on everything on this web site. All I wanted was some answers about your statements. I don't care
what you have said about me, but I do care about our broken brother/sister relationship.

It takes courage to post here.
We also, and our children, have so many great memories of our field.
And such a dark cloud hanging over it now.
Yes, it must be fun to have Bemused for an uncle.
Quite a character.
And his character is showing now.
We are thankful for him.
