If you poke the croc with a very long stick, from behind a very strong fence it tends to react swiftly. I wouldn't advocate this technique for getting action, you never know what will happen next, as our learned friend says, "run like hell".

One of the strange concepts that I garnered as a child was that humanitarianism was a waste of time.

The theory went along the lines of, if you had enough faith of the right quality, then one really didn't need to do anything else to attain heavenly admission. The response to examples of those around who served their fellow man, was that they were misguided and wasting their time. So the impression I was left with was that what I was immersed in was an uncaring, arrogant and bizzare form of religon.
In reality what was probably going on was undermining all other career and thinking options so that the only one left that had a modicum of credibility was the mission option.

It didn't work, because even back then I didn't want to turn out like those that I saw around me. Looks like the decision was totally vindicated.
