Have been listening to commentators debating the Lance Armstrong confession to Oprah. There are some interesting similarities with the child abuse that has occured in religous institutions.

Lance was a very good cyclist, but to make sure he won at all costs, he cheated. Then he lied and lied under oath about his cheating. In the process a lot of people were hurt, innocent people were tarred with the same brush and he even took legal action against those who were it now turns out telling the truth.

Then a change of heart, time to come clean and confess all. But what was his real motive and does anyone really believe him now or is this just damage control or an attempt to restore credibility?

Will the public ever trust Lance Armstrong again? Probably not. Should Lance be allowed to compete again? Good question. And what will he be remembered for? Probably not winning the Tour de France seven times, more likely as a cheat who left it far to late to come clean.

Bemused, Your comparison is spot on. Personally, I am not impressed he went to Oprah for his "confession" as I believe he should have went to the cycling committee, whoever they are. My personal opinion is no he should never be allowed to compete again. I don't know what the rules are for this sport as far as what he has done but who wants to see him competing? He should be ashamed of himself for even wanting to race again. From what I could ascertain he even admitted he is only confessing because he got caught. I would be the first to say this pales in comparison to child sex abuse and helps us to see we need to keep our eyes off man. Money, power, prestige equals.......... hmm! Cover up and corruption equals..........hmm. Full stop.

I agree with you both. Spot on. Yes, indeed.

NTM, we have waited years now for you to come clean. We have given you more than ample time to do the right thing.

Whatever consequences befall you, whatever price your mostly-innocent missionaries and their ministries pay, will be your fault. Not ours.

For what will New Tribes Mission be remembered?

You chose to call the abuse of hundreds of children in numerous countries over at least five decades "historical".

It is historical alright. It will be your distinctive place holder in misssion history books.

People of all ages throughout the world feel like cutting up their "Livestrong" bracelets because the man they thought lived out this credo was actually a cheater and a liar who didn't care who he hurt, he only cared about himself and his own glory.

Think about it.

And if any NTM leaders or members find their memory has gone a bit hazy can I suggest they read the stories on this site again. Especially the conversation threads under the Philippines and Brazil sections (as I have just done again while on holiday).

It is heartbreaking stuff.
Serious.
Criminal.
Innocent lives torn asunder.
Wretched and terrible sins committed with impunity.

And the galling thing....most of the pedophiles are unpunished...some even openly living and enjoying life. Some have said feeble apologies or have shifted blame to victims. It is sickening, sickening, sickening. This NTM is you and it is your missions legacy in the lives of so many. Do you even care? It looks like you don't because you have done and are doing almost nothing. It looks like you only respond when you have to, to court cases and when it comes to money. These men have done serious criminal offences - things that carry prison terms of decades, probably even life for some.

Shame on you. And if after reading those threads again you find you still can't act then I really question your humanity. I watched my kids play as I read some of the abuse facts (I won't call them stories) and realized that if I had stayed in NTM these things could well have happened to my kids. Thank God I was kicked out. I thought at the time it was the worst thing in the world being discarded like old rubbish by NTM. Now I see it as perhaps the best thing to ever happen to me.

Come on Larry. My challenge to you for 2013 is to start making a real difference. More and more of the world is watching you......whether you like it or not.

Yes 22_years_ago the things that happened are crimes and the only way the missions not just NTM but other will act is if they are brought into court. I really question if they are Christian at all. I think when new cases come up they should go directly to the courts forget about asking and begging for years for a mission to make things right they won't. Those long years are nothing but torture to many. Take them to court for all you can get. They have left many MKs in such a state they can't hold good jobs, can't have good marriages, the MKs' kids suffer from parents who aren't there. Many do not realize until they are in their 40 and 50 that the damage in their lives is from the abuse they suffered as children. Yes many are on the road to healing but it sure isn't because of the missions. Proof is that if child abuse is acknowledged and dealt with when the victim is still a child the results do not carry over into the adult life as those who have not been acknowledged in fact in many cases victims are called lairs. Missions if you want to be considered Christian start acting like one.

Mosquito bite, "Think on your own," "say what you think." Those two comments are usually not welcome in a mission organisation. If you activate any of these two comments the accusations is "you are not a team player." I say that is why sin, cover up, and corruption breeds. Full stop.

And when we get kicked out, we realize that it is the best thing that ever happened.

And for many of us
that is to reach out to any others who have been abused.
And to listen and at least try to understand
Those whose abuse was so much worse.
