Makes me feel like putting on my Croc skin boots and dancing, something I haven't felt like doing for far to long!
Keep dem songs rolling, I like this thread. :P

Thanks for the challenge Jerry, hope you like this version. I think Harry Chapin wrote the song, but Cat Stevens is also credited with it. So here is Cats in the Craddle.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zH46SmVv8SU

I was just a child, wanting to play
Came to the world in the usual way
But there were souls to save and words to pray
So I learned to walk while he was away
And I was talkin' 'fore he knew, and as I grew
I said "I'm gonna be like you dad
You know I'm gonna be like you"

The bibles on the table and must be read
And he don’t have time to tuck me in bed
When is time for me dad?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

Then I turned ten on one spring day
I said, "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let's play
Can you teach me to throw", He said "Not today
I got a lot to do", I said, "That's ok"
And I walked away the smile slightly dimmed
And said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm gonna be like him"

The bibles on the table and must be read
And he don’t have time to tuck me in bed
When is time for me dad?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

Well, I came home from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
"Dad, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head and said with a smile
"What I'd really like, is another soul to save
See you later, and just behave?"

The bibles on the table and must be read
And he don’t have time to tuck me in bed
When is time for me dad?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

He’s long since retired, and I’ve moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind"
He said, "I'd love to, son, if I can find the time
You see I’m not so well and I’m within heavenly view
But it's sure nice talking to you, son
It's been sure nice talking to you"

And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He never had time for me
Just those souls he had to set free

The bibles on the table and must be read
And he don’t have time to tuck me in bed
When is time for me dad?
I don't know when, but we'll get together then son
You know we'll have a good time then

Here's a stark and chilling memory:

At the Aritao center, we missionaries got together every Sunday morning for our own church service.

In the basement of the Emory dorm building. Where all sorts of vile things were going on that we were - at that time - oblivious to.

I remember one Sunday it was Les Emory's turn to "give the message".

He closed his sermon by reading the words to that song: "Cat's in the Cradle". Getting choked up, and wiping tears from his eyes.

What was going through your messed up head that day, Les?? Were you torn up by the realization that you were a monster masquerading as a shepherd?

Or had you compartmentalized your miserable life so much that the Sunday Morning Les didn't even acknowledge the existence of the Midnight Roamer Les?

Questions, questions. So many questions I will never know the answers to.

The Father-Son songs are just too sad!
But reality in some lives.
If healing and change takes place, great!

Just one more mention of Nancy Sinatra before we let that one go.
Boots.....
Remember how she let those lyrics RIP?
Oh, it was fine, indeed!

You just wanted to go out and get a pair of boots
And walk all over whomever
Was walking all over you!
I don't think I thought that way then.
No one was really doing the walking thing to me so much.
But NOW.........
I would calmly and quietly go out and buy them...

Remember how calm and quiet Mitt got recently?
Then he just EXPLODED and left again.
Get some boots and come back, OT!

That's a sad journey that many of us have travelled. Where were our parents, to busy being good missionaries, doing what they were told. Wonder how many of them got to the end of their lives and thought "wish I'd got to know my own kids?".

Thank you for the rewrites, they are wonderful songs from the past.

Jesus loves the little children
All the children of the world
Black and yellow, red and white
They're all precious in His sight
Jesus loves the little children of the world

To Bad New Tribes Mission Didn't love the little children!
