Especially this verse:

They knew who He was
They begged Him take a seat
Each in turn knelt before Him
And gently washed His feet

I expect to spend a good deal of time at the conference on my knees ... gently washing feet ....

Bemused that is so beautiful.

The truth in that poem scares me. Full stop.

Why? I suppose because this seems so true of missions in general. For some strange reason I thought of the wonderful missionary prayer letters we would read and compare them to our own ministry but then I would remind myself what we are doing is not for us but for the Lord and what he wants to accomplish through us. We started with ABWE in 1975 and what we observed seemed "ministry success" was more important than people themselves, that's about the only way I can explain it. I guess what I am trying to say is "success" at any cost seemed to be utmost in mission organisations mind and that poem just shows what Jesus really cares about. Full stop.

Bemused I shared your poem with the board. Sometimes we need encouragement. It was very encouraging to them. Thank you. I still want to cry when I read it, in a good way. I cry easy for anything.

Many thanks for the kind comments and sharing the poem. It's an interesting way of writing, taking a concept we all know and shifting it between situations i.e. having Jesus appear in a modern church or in Chicago.

Have left the last verse with a lead on for the final part of the trilogy. No objection if someone else wants to have a go at doing the last part.

Then He excused himself politely
For to foreign fields he wished to go
To find out what went wrong
All those years ago
