I want to thank the employees of New Tribes Mission for raising enough questions about the disciplinary actions taken with regard to Gary Earl that the Executive Board actually felt the pressure to send out the following explanation:
Excerpt from a "members-only" email sent out by NTM:
"In this case [Gary Earl beating a girl in his dorm bloody], after the investigative team finished its report, an independent panel was utilized to help determine disciplinary actions. All involved agreed that Gary Earl could no longer actively serve with NTM, and should be removed from the possibility of working with children, but that the findings did not require dismissal."
As explanations go, it is pretty thin, but that isn't the point. The Executive Board does not want any disgruntled employees; if possible, they want all employees to remain blissfully gruntled. You, by asking them hard questions, have pressured them to give YOU more information than they would even give the VICTIM! I am not making this up.
When one of Gary Earl's victims asked why he had not been dismissed, she was told by Brian Coombs, "This will be difficult to explain, my explanation will most likely generate a whole lot more questions."
YOU, who were not beat bloody, get an explanation, albeit one that I trust will, indeed, generate a whole lot more questions. SHE got the offer of a phone call, with all the inherent deniability that goes with that.
So, I commend you for asking for explanations. I hope you will keep it up. You are, potentially, an important part of excising the cancer of child abuse from NTM.
