Now that Paul Syson is no longer an NTM employee, it's refreshing to see that Stan Henrys is here to replace him as the voice of reason and defender of NTM.
Like Paul and like his replacement, Stan Henrys, I agree with the goal of world evangelism. I'm not sure how well NTM is doing on that front, but I don't think my opinion matters on any level. I'm just glad to see people trying to do it.
I'm also happy to see that NTM has instituted processes and procedures to protect MKs and others (such as indigenous kids) who are at risk from perverts who slip through the cracks. This seems overdue, but late is usually better than not at all.
What I find troubling in Stan Henrys' defense of NTM is not just its lack of eloquence. It's the total lack of any credit to the Fanda Eagles for the important role they played in bringing about the MK Protection Revival. Remember, it's not like Larry Brown woke up in a start in the middle of the night, called for the books to be opened and read to him and discovered, to his utter horror, that more needed to be done about protecting MKs. In fact, when one of the brave Eagles approached the (then) Executive Committee about abuse she had suffered, he told her that he wasn't sure what else they could do for her; they had already dismissed most of those responsible for the abuse. Most?!?
See? The problems were common knowledge, but there was a lack of incentive to do anything about it. Anything besides hide it, I mean. That is where the Fanda Eagles came in. That is when things began to change. It was only because of these women - and women, we know, have no place in leadership in the "church" of NTM! - that the NTM leadership decided to make some changes. Stan Henrys forgot to mention that, and it mars his defense not a little.
Larry Brown, himself an MK, put in long hours praying, crying and making unannounced phone calls in an attempt to make all of this go away. Eventually, as it became obvious that it was going anywhere but away, he handed off to Scott Ross and the legal staff. There had to be some way to stem the flow of money out of the "church" of NTM into the greedy hands of abused MKs. I note that the love of money may well come into play in this; I hope that Stan Henrys will address this aspect in future posts.
Meanwhile, I'm sure he speaks for many in NTM today. Especially now that Paul Syson isn't in anymore!
