PHILIPPINES LAWSUIT SETTLED

On Thursday, NTM USA reached an amicable settlement ending all claims with a woman who had filed suit against New Tribes Mission over abuse suffered while at an NTM school in the Philippines.

I am also glad to see the word "amicable" used.

(Oops, I guess that's President Obama's new slogan. Surely he doesn't have sole rights to it though. I think I've heard it before.)

Anything on the other lawsuit? And is it known for sure that it's also in regards to Aritao and Les Emory?

Jerry, I have very limited knowledge about the other lawsuit. Obtained through the grapevine.

I am quite certain it was not filed by another Aritao MK. I understand it is an MK from another NTM school.

No one has ever posted any clarification about the other suit here on Fanda Eagles, as far as I can remember.

I heard from a reliable source that it does not involve Aritao or the Philippines.

On July 29 the Orlando Sentinel reported that New Tribes is being sued yet again by an abused MK. This is the second suit filed against New Tribes this year. The first was filed last May, by a female MK from the Philippines, who attended Aritao school in the Philippines and named Les Emory as the perpetrator.

This latest suit is filed by a female, being referred to in the article as Jane Doe, who attended Fanda Boarding School in Senegal. Although the suit names a male dorm parent as the perpetrator, it is being brought against New Tribes. New Tribes is accused of not properly investigating abuse, and when it did find out about it, covering it up.

New Tribes Mission hit by another child sex abuse suit
The child of missionaries in Senegal is suing in Sanford.

SANFORD – Another woman has sued New Tribes Mission, one of the largest Christian mission organizations in the world, the second alleging she was the child of missionaries when she was sexually abused by a dorm dad and Bible teacher at a New Tribes-run boarding school 25 years ago.

This woman, identified only as Jane Doe, alleges she was victimized at the boarding school in Fanda, Senegal.

The earlier suit, filed in May, alleges that a different woman, Jane Doe No. 7, was sexually abused on a different continent – Asia – also at a church-run boarding school.

We will never know the details of the settlement between Jane Doe 7. We don't need to; we only know that she is satisfied with the outcome. At the same time we
do, however, know a number of things that should be reviewed at this time.

1. NTM was very, very concerned about Jane. They wanted her to "heal" and "forgive" and "move on." They were dreadfully sorry about what had happened to her many years ago when there was a whole different set of leaders, for whose actions it really isn't fair to hold the present leadership responsible. Period. That's how they wanted to deal with it.

2. Jane made no progress in her dealings with NTM until a law suit was filed. To repeat: NO PROGRESS.

3. No investigation was required for Jane's case to come to what NTM calls an "amicable" resolution. GRACE didn't investigate, Pat Hendrix didn't have to assemble a team, no one had to do anything. And, why should there be any investigation? Everyone knows what happened, who was involved and who did and didn't do what.

4. Jane had professional help in dealing with NTM. Whatever the final settlement was, it is a far cut above what she would have got on her own, going to NTM and sitting down with the syrupy nice people there. Jane is clearly a tough person, but she is no match at all for NTM. She may not have walked away with the keys to the kingdom, but she wouldn't have got the dust off their feet had she not had the able assistance of an experienced attorney.

5. At some point, Jane realized that NTM was not on her side; they are on their own side. It could never be otherwise, and it is foolish to assume otherwise. It is proper that NTM is on NTM's side. But, that makes them an adversary, not a collaborator. When Jane asked NTM to do some specific things to help her... they said, "Have your lawyer call our lawyer." She did.

6. NTM drug out the law suit as long as they could. They made life miserable for Jane, even though she was not the one who had to deal directly with NTM. Still, Jane's law suit was settled out of court before the investigations of the other schools have even begun.
