Perhaps another way of looking at it is that it is not the baggage that we carry with us and spend much of our lives trying to ditch, but deciphering what was garbage that we were being fed and realising that is what it was. Because of the isolated intense environments that are MKs worlds, we naturally assumed that everything we were fed was quality diet. Trouble is much of it wasn't anything more than sugar coated garbage. The outside worlds were painted as secularly bad and devoid of good and even other similar theological strains were offered as tainted. The one thing that we didn't seem to be taught was to think for ourselves, to question what the core values of anything were, but to just accept what we were taught as being unwaveringly correct.
The difference between growing up "in the good ole USA" and a foreign mission field, was the isolation factor from "normal" society. What was on the other side of the fence was "brown gold" not Mc Donalds and Starbucks. And there was no where to go and few to help sort the baggage and garbage from the genuine pearls of wisdom in the isolation that was the Land of an MK.
