Oh dear, tricky issue this one and not exactly a compassionate response to it.
So why would anyone doing their life's calling for God actually need antidepressants in the first place? A good health professional treats the cause, or at least spends some time trying to find what the cause is.
I'm not qualified to give an opinion on privacy issues in the U.S., however an employer issuing such a statement in New Zealand would probably be in serious trouble. Asking about such health issues as cardiac, respiratory or diabetic illnesses are justifiable, as in case of emergency it is imperative one knows what one is dealing with, but depressive conditions are a totally different kettle of fish and need to be treated as such. Almost everyone suffers from depression from time to time. Most of us are fortunate enough to be able to pull out of it and get going under our own steam, but there is a significant percentage of the population who are medicated to help them cope with depressive disorders. Anti depressants have their place in medicine, however looking for the cause first is always the first and best step to take, then going from there.
