This might be where MKs at Numonohi differed. The attitude was such that we had little to do with the local children. And if we did they should have been grateful we allowed them . It seemed odd at through time and bizarre in hindsight. Why were we really there? wonder if it has changed?

Because I had so much contact with our neighbors in our village I find it strange when I hear of those who did not have contact and wonder why were they there. Did the parents treat it like a job and not bring any work home with them. I find that hard to imagine. Did you go to the local national church? Of course there were only our family and two single ladies on our station which was common in our mission. We spent a lot of time with our neighbors visiting, playing with kids especially as a preschooler. My Mom did insist that they had clothes on when they cam to play. Then it was common for children under 6 to wear nothing. Being the bossy kid I was I am sure they played what I wanted. But I did that to the other MKs too.

at numonohi we lived in our bubble. the highlands highway lay along side the property and it surely went somewhere. but not for us to know. we stayed within the boundaries as told (except the few, like my brother, who rebelled and hitch-hiked to Goroka. BAD BOY! there were consequences for that you know!) our life was small. we were small. insignificant. tucked away in order to cause no trouble to the serious work of translation in the villages far away. we learned to not stir up trouble. "stay in your place. quietly. hush, hush. be good." it was our role. MK life meant we were children of busy workers who were far more important than we were. MK- a title that is my scar.

Hi Shary . Highlander is spot on. Some of us male mks escaped using our wits. Female mks had little chance. We were told that evil lurked beyond the fence and we should be grateful for the fence that kept the evil and dirty natives out. IT WAS LIES!

I've heard quite a few people who get very suspicious about missionaries taking pictures...if the missionaries do not actually have a very close relationship with the local people and are seen as holding themselves apart from locals, then the suspicion becomes that missionaries take lots of pictures at events, etc. just for appearances and to keep the funds coming. Like it's just a great big photo-op for marketing purposes only.

I really love to take lots of pictures wherever we go, but this is a good reminder for me to be aware of what I might be communicating to people. One thing we've done is to take pictures and then have them developed to hand out copies...most everyone that we've done that for have been very pleased because they don't typically have very many (if any) developed photos of themselves and their family.
