The problem started in 1942, when the NTM baby was born, stark naked.
According to NTM's own website, NTM was started by folks with "no funds or organization behind them". The context in which this is stated implies that this is something to be proud of - no funds. no organization.
I think both of these things were problems - but not problems that were overcome successfully and problems that created an environment ripe for abuse.
No Funds. The constant lack of money creates the type of atmosphere that breeds the type of abuse we are all aware of - it creates dependency. it creates fear. it creates timidity. it allows for the abuse of power because the limited funds that do come in can be cut off at any moment at the whims and dictate of a few individuals, with no due process whatsoever. Where there are funds, those funds tend to be used for purposes remote from accomplishing the advertised task.
No Organization behind them. NTM is now an organization. So, at first glance it appears this problem has been solved. They did not have an organization when it was first started. Now they have one. But, three observations from me. First, from my experience, the organization that was created was not designed to be "behind them", it was designed to be "in front" of them - an obstacle. With rules, procedures, dictates, and environments that obstructed rather than supported. Second, the organization was designed to create pockets of power, with near unlimited control and rights with virtually no accountability and oversight. The rank and file had to do what they were told to do, or they had to leave, period - the organization was designed to "control", not to facilitate the advertised task. Third, NTM the organization became NTM the religion.
And so you have it. The babe that was born in 1942, stark naked, has now been fully clothed - in ignorance, self righteousness, power, and control.
Perhaps it should go back to where it started - no money. no organization. stark naked.
