People are emailing me asking if they are breaking the rules.

You can be angry. You can disagree with someone. You can speak your mind. You can use strong language.

The only thing you cannot do is pretend to be someone you are not. We only had that happen once.

Just for the record, Kari, this is me. Really me. Not the other Gene Long, the idiot!

Is there a way to delete oneself from the members list on the forums?

I don't see a way for you to do that yourself, but I'm pretty sure Kari could do it for you. However, if you go to the user control panel and turn off the email and private message options, and set yourself to always be invisible, it would pretty much accomplish the same thing (but you would still be able to post).

Kari

I feel sheepish for admitting this, but here goes: I received a couple of private messages tonight. I pushed reply and typed my responses. And then I pushed submit. But both messages are still in my Outbox. Do I need to do something else to send them on their way? Thanks.

They stay in your outbox until the person you sent it to picks it up. I had to figure that out too. :)

It's a common question and these forums are not very intuitive. Not stupid at all:)

do you think we could have a cursing page that maybe could only be accessed by a secret password? I'm really upset with the volume of abuses that keep getting worse..I was shocked beyond belief to hear of the violent beatings of kids in PNG! ###***!!! AAAARGH! I feel the need to vent in an inapropriate manner that would not be a stumbling block to others!!!

I grew up as an Army Brat, the son of a career enlisted man. Cursing is something I have to battle every day, even now. It just comes so easily.

And, of course, sometimes cursing is an effective way of expressing ourselves, if somewhat inappropriate. I have a special set of words that I reserve, for instance, to use when I am working on my car. A very similar set serves me during computer problems. And, an abbreviated set works well when I stub my toe, hit my finger with a hammer or otherwise injure myself.

I know, and I agree, that cursing lowers us, it reflects our worst side, even as we try to use it to curse those things that aggravate, frustrate and anger us. But, it works to vent our emotions.

In the case of those things that are the subjects of this forum, blog and website, I think cursing is totally out of bounds. The hideous abuse, the shameless coverup and the continued intransigence of the leadership of New Tribes Mission to work with victims to see justice done (think, for instance, of That Girl's requests) should not be elevated to the heights of swearing. These atrocities are so far beneath contempt that any curse words imaginable would only make it look better than it really is.

Why, for instance, should the contemptible FAQ's that NTM has foisted off on its constituency be accorded the same honor as a computer glitch? That is unthinkable.

Down and Out, save your epithets for such mundane situations as they will feel at home in. Do not dishonor those filthy words by using them to decry the crimes and continued stubborn pride of men who only pretend to care. Curse words, swear words, the most vile language we can concoct will only feel ill at ease before this evil. Do not, I repeat, honor the abominable actions (and inactions) of NTM by using these words. NTM has done nothing to earn such respect.
