Coy, Edu, Joel Laurentino, Jackson in the goal, and Ben Royer

unbeatable

in their prime...they could beat the best team in Brazil....futebol de salao

we could draft Albertao (the Enforcer) as a backup...or Carlos Alberto from Via....or even Komar...or Tales...or Talinho....or Sconta.....
another guy that was really good was Ronald from Itabuna.....didn't they lose their daughter

for futebol de campo....Robson, Aguinaldo, Sconta, Ronald, plus the first five guys..... above, plus Mehal from Via, plus the dentist..., plus Silvinho...what was the dentist's name?.....good grief...why can't I remember it.....I think for futebol de campo....probably Roger Bailey III in the goal..............I didn't get to see much of Andy Templeton and Joel Parker in their prime....do you remember Albertao's kick when Andy was like in 7th grade...ouch

now, as far as the American missionaries, the only guy that really stood out on the soccer court and field, in my time at Via, was probably Ben Royer....and we didn't see him much because he was mostly in Anapolis building stuff with Rodney

he had tremendous ball control...very light on his feet even though he was the biggest guy out there

if you let him by, or if you let him start to get by you on your right, his left foot was lethal....he was good with both feet, but the power in his left leg meant you had to be ready to defend on both sides, and when he started to lean into you, there was little you could do to stop him.

take a guy like Luiz Ferreira.....strong, powerful right foot, but no left.....so all I had to do, at least in salao.....was watch the right foot

Erick Wnuk was the best soccer player of the kids I went to school with......he could kick well with both feet....he actually played on the city team
I should have spent more time playing against him in 7th grade, instead of playing Ultimate with the girls

in terms of overall athlete in the American missionary category at Via:

no question

Jim Ketcham......solid on defense in salao.....solid in volleyball.......very good at basketball......knew how to play tennis

probably the most competitive person in the Tri-State area

He and my uncle Danny.....2 best chess players I ever saw

Jim had the best command of Portuguese of any missionary there, especially from a grammar perspective.

I borrowed his Alistair McLean books.....I loaned him my Sports Illustrated issues, except for the February issue

Armed Forces Radio ......
I could listen to the Lakers and Celtics while home in Shekinah in June

the signal during the Finals would typically fade out in the early fourth quarter...but not to worry....you could always read about the game in Sports Illustrated....which arrived by boat mail six months later.

a big shout out to Jon Kroeker

get on here and post, turkey

You and Bruce Taylor will have good conversations in heaven

I remember the night you broke your arm on the quadra.
I freaked out.

The only thing I knew to do.....was go find Fay Barker.....the most practical woman in the Tri-State area.
