Don't worry, all the major religons have done the same thing. It's called theological evolution, it just doesn't improve the species though.

22 years ago I know that is difficult when you are surrounded by those who live in fear of not believing the right thing. I have come to the conclusion God saves the people He chooses, even if they come from Mars. It is not my problem. From what we were taught the Holy Spirit is the one who convicts of sin. So I always wondered why do we have to threaten people all the time. The only thing I see is my responsibility to love people.

Kathy I also leave hell up to God and who is there. If He chooses to send no one there that is OK. But I believe God is just and somehow people who do not love other people such as abusers, no they do love love children, will somehow pay. It is actually a release to not have to make all my beliefs all line up.

I am glad the author makes a distinction between abusive religion and a healthy, empowering faith community. I believe that it is possible to walk away from spiritual abuse without losing your own faith, hope and love.

I also understand why some walk away completely, because of the trauma they have suffered in an environment that controls its members through fear and coercion.
