I happened across the link to the petition tonight on Facebook, and found my way here. I've been reading posts on this site, as well as these forums, and I skimmed the GRACE report for the better part of an hour. I'm deeply saddened and angered by what has been done to some of you.

I'm an NTM MK from Mexico and I have lived in the dorm there. My experience was positive, so I guess I had just assumed that these kinds of things didn't happen within NTM. My heart goes out to those of you who have been hurt, and I will lift you up in prayer to our Heavenly Father.

Zank, I was glad to hear that your experiences were positive. I'm curious: How isolated was the school in Mexico?

Here in Thailand, where the school has also received high marks in general, the school and the dorms were located in a large (about one million population when it was started, much more now) provincial capital city. Everything - dorms, class rooms and offices - were located in normal neighborhoods. It was probably a challenge to maintain a decorous level of privacy; it was impossible to avoid casual observation. Thai people will admit to being nosey, especially about foreigners. Eyes had to have been everywhere.

I don't think that is the only consideration. I honestly believe we had some very high quality people involved in running the school and dorms. They deserve credit for making things as hospitable and safe as they did. But, I'm sure other schools had some pretty high quality people involved in their schools, too. So, I've been casting around for a common thread.

I've been wondering if the relative isolation of many of the mission boarding schools, not just in NTM but other mission societies as well, does not provide just such a commonality. Hence my question.

I was wondering the same thing about common connection between schools/fields where abuse occured. It isn't across the board (or hasn't been disclosed to be yet by testimony of anyone on this forum)--so far no forums have been opened for abuse in Mexico, Indonesia, Panama, Colombia, Guinea, Ivory Coast....

What's the common denominator? Is there one? The isolation of schools seems a reasonable conclusion, yet as JB mentioned PQQ is not on the list. Does it have to do with the length of time NTM has been in those countries? I haven't brushed up on my NTM history in a while, but weren't Senegal, PNG, Bolivia, Brazil and Venezuela some of the "older fields"?
