So ... I am seeing a flurry of attempts to explain the name change.

Some of the reasoning is not adding up, to me.

Here's a sample from Facebook:

"As you may know, our mission organization has changed it's name from New Tribes Mission to Ethnos360. This has been a long time in the works as the name New Tribes Mission has some limiting factors when it comes to reaching people with the Gospel. Many of the people groups we work with no longer like being called "tribes" nor being called "new" (their people group has a long history) and many countries no longer grant visas to "mission" organizations. The word "ethnos" is the Greek word for "nations" and the 360 refers to all points of the compass. Names are irrelevant to our work and some missionary organizations have found that a name that was helpful in years past, are now a hindrance to fulfilling the Great Commission. We will continue on as before in seeing churches established and strengthened, but under a new name."

Ok. Well, New Tribes Mission has changed so much in recent years that not only does it no longer resemble the mission my parents joined in 1952, but it doesn't even look like the mission I left in 2001. Many NTM missionaries now live in what we used to call "closed countries", and they get in there through "creative access", ie. they do not enter these countries with "missionary" as their stated profession. NTM is not alone in doing this, and I am pretty sure that this new method of world evangelism is no longer an actual secret from any world governments, even though the graduates from the ethnos360 training center who plan to do this type of work are not included in the graduation photo.

The above explanatory paragraph mentions that many countries no longer grant visas to "mission" organizations. But here is where I am puzzled: if the name change is an attempt to hide the fact that ethnos360 is a mission organization, they are doing a poor job of concealing their identity. Google ethnos360 today, and what do you see? "Ethnos360 - My Christian Mission Organization"! And a bunch of other links that take you to the former NTM website, where the words "mission" and "missionary" appear everywhere!

As always, the masses of faithful followers will accept any explanation given them.

The rest of us will remain skeptical.

And they spake unto him, "Behold, we live in enligtened times and they who we claimed to help in former times are now less a priority in our business plan. Our new model of structure is to build for ourselves mansions here on earth, so all will know what a glimpse of heaven is really like. And our past was such that it is better we draw a curtain over it, that cannot be rendered in two". And Jesus paused, waiting for the cock to crow, but it did not. Then they served Him roast chicken and bade Him farewell, for He was a little to scruffy for the image that went with the name they did now wish to be known by.

How Ethel The Aardvark Got Her Name

Ethel the Aardvark
Followed her nose
Following smells

So now what should we call Ethel?
From the country to city
I guess we should call her
Ethnos360

Upon closer look, NTM, Inc. changed its name to ETHNOS360, Inc. AND ETHNOS360, Inc. changed its name to NTM, Inc.

Based on this, there were already two legal entities in existence, which are affiliates. They merely changed names with each other.

Interesting stuff. Interesting stuff.

Does this mean that everything that once belonged to NTM now belongs to Ethnos360? And that an entity called NTM now has whatever belonged to a brand-new entity called Ethnos360? Which would probably be ... nothing??
