Oh dear, it is getting rather quiet on Fanda Eagles. Lots of readers, but . . .
So time for a bit of cultural education and who better to enlighten than someone who has British heritage, lived with Americans in PNG, lives in Kiwiland and alas knows a few Australians
It is that time of year when Kiwis celebrate Guy Fawkes night. This being an English rebel who decided it would be a good idea to blow up the British parliament several centuries ago. So we do so by letting all the countries budding arsonists buy fireworks and let them off. Terrorising the local animals and locals themselves. Now this is fine in England, where November is cold, dark and wet (actually it is like that in summer too, but that is another story), but here in Kiwiland the grass is often already dry and firefighters get a week of practising their finely honed skills. Completely crazy and would never happen in more sane countries like the U.S. of course.
On the other hand, tomorrow night is Halloween and guess where that custom was imported from. Last year I dressed up as an MK and went round telling stories about my childhood

, took me weeks to get through all the candy
So as the countdown to Thanksgiving begins, spare a thought for the poor firefighters in Kiwiland and all those who answer the door tomorrow night and see a confused MK in lycra cycling shorts on their doorstep saying "trick or treat"
