IHART Progress Report January 23, 2013
The Vianopolis investigation began in May, 2011, The Tambo and Panama investigations began in January, 2012. Following is an update on each investigation. Vianapolis:
The scope of the investigation covers the fall of 1983 – summer of 1993. At the present time, nearly all individuals who have expressed a desire to provide information concerning abuse at the Boarding School, Vianopolis, Brazil have been contacted and interviewed. A few remain to corroborate information already obtained. The review, analysis, and consolidation of information are ongoing and individuals requiring interviews continue to be identified. The interviews continue and those remaining will be conducted and completed in January and February 2013.
As various aspects of the investigation come together, portions of the Statement of Findings are being completed. It is anticipated that the investigation will be completed, and a final Statement of Findings submitted in March 2013.
Tambo:
The scope of the investigation covers 1959 – 2004 when the school was closed. The investigators have 1056 student names to attempt contact, which includes some staff as possible witnesses/survivors and or perpetrators. This does not include other adult staff members. Early January, 2013, 49 US mailings went out along with some e-mails. So far, in January, 14 MK’s have requested interviews. With the scope of this investigation, we expect this investigation to last 2-3 years. The alleged perpetrator list has 42 names taken from the interviews I have which are not all. Panama:
The scope of the investigation runs from 1962 – 2006. During the month of December two interviews were conducted. The holiday season, inclement weather, travel, and illness contributed to the small number of interviews conducted in December, both for those to be interviewed and for the Pii staff. The team is doing everything they can to be finished by mid to late summer 2013.
