Did you ever purpose to love an unlovable? It's one of my favorite strategies for dealing with really irritating people. No matter what they say or do, don't let yourself get offended. Keep talking to them. Ask them questions, talk about yourself. Offer them food. At some point you get interested in them as a person, not as an irritant. They soften up, you share more . . .and all of the sudden you find you have a real friend.

I think Tribers need real friends. Someone that will say, "Come on, man, now you're being arrogant." Other things you could say as a friend:

"I hate the way your field director said that to you."
"I think you need a vacation. You're not getting back into that pulpit until you and your wife
pull this together. I saw the way you were talking to the maid."
"Why are you writing another prayer letter? Don't we hear from you enough?"
"You've gone out to eat four times this week and your kid looks like a ragamuffin. Don't tell
me you don't have money."

Don't allow any of the spiritual trappings of the missionary life affect your relationship with them. Don't give them any money. No prayer card on your refrigerator. That's just weird. Pick them up from the airport, but then ask them to pick you up too.

Bring along your LGBTQI friends along. Insist that the Triber treat them equally.

They will be strangely fascinated with you, in your honesty and forthrightness.

Be there when they fall. Allow them to help you out sometimes.

Maybe they would stop abusing kids.
