Dear MB,

You raise a very good point. We don't know a lot about what makes each other tick. Sometimes it is a practical thing, after all there are so many people in our circles it is hard to get to know all.
But I wonder if part of it is the "NTM façade effect" that lingers about. The pictures of perfect families that we were so encouraged to paint for those prayercards/letters and other props. Has it become a way of life, so that imperfections are airbrushed away and who we really are gets lost in the mists of "the cause".
And yet, can a person be a truly effective missionary without being honest about who they are and what their journey has moulded them into? Can a person be a truly effective anything without the same honesty.

Anyway I'm just musing, the sun is coming up and I'm off tramping with the lovely Mrs Bemused, before the summer sun gets to warm.

Public P-ing was never encouraged in our past.

But this has been kind of fun!

;)

Thank you for this thread, Allbetter!

Raz, what can one say? Your dear daughters and then a supposed friend, a fellow missionary if that's what he could be called. I don't want to offend, this is always my worry, I know what the Bible says about worrying, but I so understand your daughter wanting privacy. People who know me don't really know me at all, except my husband. Some just can't expose their life, I understand. Full stop.

Thank you, Pamela.

Yes, I support my daughter in being who she is. I may be a let-it-all-hang-out kind of person, but I do understand that not everyone is.

If only more mums would let their children be who they are. I am a bit of a control freak, thinking I guess, that will give me more power to protect my children from things they didn't even know they need protection from. Does that make sense? I see those same tendencies as I interact with my grandchildren. I fear for them and they don't have a clue why. I have a beautiful granddaughter that goes to a Southern Baptist Church and I have warned my daughter but she just doesn't get it. I do believe if I could "let it all hang out" as Raz says my grandchildren would benefit from it. Full stop.

That's one good thing about a bad experience----or can be--
We don't want it repeated, so we are more gracious to our kids.
What happened between my mom and me is NOT happening between my daughter and me.
And the personalities and gifting are the same.
It's a much happier situation.

We thought we were being honest
And we did not buy completely in to the ntm thing.
Hence……
No longer with ntm…..
O happy day!
But looking back and learning from all of you---
We could have done MUCH MUCH better.
No second chances allowed.
Have your fun 'cause too much of it is true.
Not with all people
Thankfully--there were some people who were true.
But not that many…….

We led somewhat ordinary suburban lives pre NTM. Dad worked, mum stayed at home and us kids went to school e.t.c.

Then we came upon an almighty fountain, which the leader of our little band discovered. And on the side was written NTM. Many others were at the fountain, sipping the water and feeling inspired, for the water had life changing effects.
But we were different, our leader not only sipped the water, he dove in with an almighty splash and everyone heard the splash. But then he called for all those around him to also dive in, to abandon their half hearted ways and become fully committed, like he was. And he made us get in, except I hung on to the side rail for dear life, because the water ran deep in the fountain and I doubted my swimming abilities and the life jackets had been thrown out, to increase the commitment level.
And I watched over the years as other families came to the great fountain to sip the water and I listened as he who dived in questioned their commitment because they did not have such great commitment as he. So many were persuaded to fully immerse themselves and their kith and kin.
But when I looked at the water closely, it appeared strangely contaminated and many of those who sipped, complained of a bitter taste and wisely wandered away.
So eventually it came to pass that it was time for me to leave the fountain and so I dried myself the best I could and wandered away. But the water had strange qualities, it could never be fully dried off, even with designer towels and vigorous shaking.
And it lead me to a journey of discovery, where I returned to the fountain and had the water tested. And the test results were thus:

A sip of the water may well leave a strange taste in the mouth, but survival rate is high.
A short immersion in the water could lead to some detrimental health effects.
But swim in the stuff at your own risk, for these waters are not in any Way, the Truth or real Life.
