I've just been watching Hillary Clinton speaking via video link at the memorial service for our earthquake victims.
When our city exploded a year ago today the U.S. govt very kindly sent down a team of Urban Search and Rescue personel who worked tirelessly to rescue the living and retrieve those who did not survive. When they left, they kindly left their equipment for us to use (which we did in Japan, shortly after).
In our hour of terror and despair it was comforting to know that other nations were willing to send their best to help. We are very grateful.
